{"id":2579,"date":"2024-06-10T11:22:15","date_gmt":"2024-06-10T17:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/frontendmasters.com\/blog\/?p=2579"},"modified":"2024-06-10T15:04:09","modified_gmt":"2024-06-10T21:04:09","slug":"masonry-and-reading-order","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/frontendmasters.com\/blog\/masonry-and-reading-order\/","title":{"rendered":"Masonry and reading order"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Two months back there was a bit of a hubbub about masonry layout in CSS with <a href=\"https:\/\/webkit.org\/blog\/15269\/help-us-invent-masonry-layouts-for-css-grid-level-3\/\">Jen at Apple making a case<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.chrome.com\/blog\/masonry\">Rachel at Google agreeing<\/a> those use cases would be great, but should be based on <code>display: masonry;<\/code> not <code>display: grid;<\/code>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then: nothing. Web standards just move at the pace that it moves and that&#8217;s usually <a href=\"https:\/\/arc.net\/l\/quote\/ubuyloem\">good slow<\/a>. But I admit I&#8217;m a little surprised that it&#8217;s been radio silence. I think there is a CSS Working Group meeting in Spain this very week though so we&#8217;ll see if that ignites anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/frontendmasters.com\/blog\/feedback-on-masonry-layout\/\">My own feedback<\/a> said <a href=\"https:\/\/frontendmasters.com\/blog\/feedback-on-masonry-layout\/\">this is partially a conversation about tabbing order<\/a>, and it definitely <a href=\"https:\/\/piccalil.li\/blog\/masonry-and-tabbing\/\">is<\/a>. So then the bigger question becomes, does this tabbing issue need to be solved <em>as a part of masonry<\/em>? Or can we solve it more broadly? <a href=\"https:\/\/rachelandrew.co.uk\/archives\/2024\/05\/26\/masonry-and-reading-order\/\">Rachel introduces the idea<\/a> that it <em><a href=\"https:\/\/drafts.csswg.org\/css-display-4\/#reading-order-items\">can<\/a><\/em> be more broadly solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8230; my personal hope is that we can land the proposal for&nbsp;<code>reading-order-items<\/code>&nbsp;before we have interoperable masonry, in whatever form it takes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two months back there was a bit of a hubbub about masonry layout in CSS with Jen at Apple making a case and Rachel at Google agreeing those use cases would be great, but should be based on display: masonry; not display: grid;.
